The Central Government has decided to increase by eight times the amount of compensation given to the next of kin of a victim in the hit-and-run case. Along with this, a compensation of Rs 2 lakh will be given to the families of those killed in the hit and run from April 1.
According to a notification by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the compensation amount given to the seriously injured person in such cases has also been increased by four times. Now from April 1, the compensation amount will be increased to Rs 50,000.
In this notification issued on February 25, the ministry said that the name of the scheme will be ‘Compensation to Victims of Hit and Run Motor Accident Scheme, 2022’ and it will be effective from April 1, 2022. The draft plan was notified by the ministry on 2 August 2021.
“The objective of this compensation scheme for victims of hit and run accidents is to increase the compensation amount,” an official statement said. This scheme will replace the Compensation Scheme, 1989. It is noteworthy that earlier the government used to give compensation of only 25 thousand rupees to the kin of the victims killed in the hit and run accident, whereas only 12,500 rupees as compensation to the victims of the accident. But it was available.
