New Delhi. According to the US space agency NASA, those interested in watching stars will get to see the spectacular celestial view of ‘Supermoon’ in India on Monday. NASA said that the moon will appear full from Sunday morning to Wednesday morning. Its peak will be visible from Nepal eastwards across Asia and Australia on Tuesday morning.
This astronomical event, one of four consecutive supermoons this year, will be visible in India on the night of August 19 and the morning of August 20. The term ‘supermoon’ was coined by astrologer Richard Nolle in 1979. The phenomenon occurs when the new moon or the full moon is within 90 per cent of its shortest distance from Earth. The full supermoon is notable for being the largest and brightest full moon of the year.
This full moon is also a blue moon, as it is the third full moon in a season with four full moons, although it will not appear blue. The first use of the term ‘blue moon’ was in 1528. There are several speculations about its origin. These include an old English phrase meaning “treacherous moon” or a reference to rare atmospheric conditions in which the moon appears blue.
The next supermoon of this year will be on September 17. It is also known as the Harvest Moon. There will also be a partial lunar eclipse during the night of that day as a part of it will go into the shadow of the Earth.
