Mumbai. A strong storm and rain brought huge devastation in Maharashtra’s capital Mumbai on Monday evening. Here, due to strong winds, a huge hoarding fell down, due to which at least 14 people lost their lives. 73 people have also been injured in this accident, out of which 43 people are admitted in the hospital and the condition of some is said to be critical, while more than 30 injured have been discharged after treatment. After this accident, many people are even calling it ‘hoarding of death looming over their heads’.
According to the information received, generally the length and width of such hoardings is 40*40 feet, i.e. 40 feet long and 40 feet wide… whereas this hoarding was 120*120. In such a situation, the question is arising that how was such a huge hoarding put up there and who gave permission for it?
BMC declared hoarding illegal
Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has declared this hoarding illegal. He told that this hoarding was put up on the land of State Government Railway Police and he had informed the GRP about this hoarding. BMC says that permission for this hoarding was given not by them, but by the ACP of GRP.

What are the rules and regulations for putting up hoardings?
Hoardings are a very important source of income for BMC. BMC earns around Rs 200-300 crore revenue every year through hoardings alone. In such a situation, BMC has prepared a SOP for the permission to install hoardings and its renewal.
- It is mandatory to obtain permission from BMC for installing hoardings in Mumbai.
- To install new hoardings in Mumbai, permission has to be taken from the Additional Commissioner level officer of BMC.
- It is necessary to have a gap of 70-100 meters between two hoardings, so that people walking on the road do not face any problem.
- These hoardings have to be renewed every two years. For this also the approval of a Deputy Commissioner level officer is required.
- If anyone puts up hoarding without the permission of BMC, then BMC not only imposes fine against him but can also file a case against him.
CM Shind ordered action
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has ordered BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani and Mumbai Police to investigate the tragedy. He has announced an ex-gratia amount of Rs 5 lakh to the families of all those killed in this accident. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde visited the spot on Monday night and ordered an audit of all the hoardings put up in the city. Shinde told reporters, ‘This is a very unfortunate incident. The government will investigate this and action will be taken against those responsible. I have asked the BMC Commissioner to conduct a structural audit of all the hoardings in the city. If hoardings are found illegal and dangerous, they will be removed immediately.
