exit poll
New Delhi: Voting will end at 6 pm today in the last phase of the Lok Sabha elections. After this, all TV channels will show the results of exit polls. When the results will be announced after June 4, it will be these exit polls that will keep the parties tied in hope or despair. Today we are going to tell you how different the exit polls were from the actual results in 2009, 2014 and 2019.
What did the exit polls say in 2014?
In the 2014 exit poll, News 24-Chanakya had given 370 seats to NDA while UPA was given 70 seats. While India TV-CVoter had given 289 seats to NDA and 101 seats to UPA. Similarly, CNN-IBA-CSDS had given 280 seats to NDA and 97 seats to UPA. NDTV-Hansa Research had given 279 seats to NDA and 103 seats to UPA. ABP News-Nielsen had given 276 seats to NDA and 97 seats to UPA. Similarly, India Today-Cesaro had given 272 seats to NDA and 115 seats to UPA.
Times Now-ORG had given 249 seats to NDA and 148 seats to UPA. On an average, all the exit polls had given 283 seats to NDA and 105 seats to UPA. When the results came, NDA got 336 seats while UPA got 60 seats. Thus, NDA got 53 seats and UPA got 45 seats, which was different from the exit poll.
In 2014, the results were different from the exit polls
In 2014, an average of eight exit polls had predicted that the BJP-led NDA would win 283 seats and the Congress-led UPA would win 105 seats. The exit polls that year failed to predict the extent of the ‘Modi wave’. When the results came, the NDA won 336 seats. The UPA got just 60 seats. Of these, the BJP had won 282 and the Congress 44.
What the exit polls were saying in 2019
On the other hand, in 2019, 13 exit polls gave an average of 306 seats for the NDA and 120 for the UPA. The exit polls again underestimated the performance of the NDA, which won a total of 353 seats. The UPA got 93 seats. Of these, the BJP got 303 seats and the Congress got 52 seats.
Exit polls of 2009
In 2009, when the UPA returned to power, an average of four exit polls underestimated the number of winners. They gave the UPA 195 seats and the NDA 185. The UPA eventually won with 262 seats, compared to the NDA’s 158. Of these, the Congress won 206 seats and the BJP 116.
