Wayanad. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on a visit to landslide-ravaged Wayanad, on Saturday visited the damaged GVHS School Vellaramala and asked how many children have lost their parents. After landing in Kalpetta by plane, he first reached the damaged Government GVHS School Vellaramala.
An emotional PM Modi asked Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Union Minister Suresh Gopi, “How many children have lost their loved ones.” PM Modi was deeply saddened to see the damaged school. He talked to the CM about the rehabilitation of the landslide victims. G.V.H.S. School Vellaramala had 582 students. Of these, 27 are reported missing.
The Prime Minister spent 15 minutes at the school and inquired about the plans for the new school building. PM Modi also visited the 190 feet long Bailey Bridge built by the Indian Army. He walked on it and interacted with defence officials. He visited a local hospital and relief camp and met the injured.
PM Modi also chaired a review meeting in which Kerala Governor Arif Mohammad Khan, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and other officials will be present. A day before the Prime Minister visited the landslide-affected area, the Kerala government had sought Rs 2,000 crore from the Centre for rehabilitation and relief work in the disaster-affected area.
Earlier, PM Modi landed at Kannur airport, where he was welcomed by the Governor of Kerala, Chief Minister and top officials of the central and state government. A landslide occurred in Wayanad on July 30. In this, 416 people were killed and more than 150 went missing.
