S Jaishankar
New Delhi: India’s Foreign Minister S Jaishankar said in the Lok Sabha on Friday that the government is awaiting the exit of 69 Indian nationals recruited in the Russian army and in many cases there are indications that the Indian nationals were misled. He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had raised the matter with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Responding to supplementary questions in the House, he also said that the government has taken seriously the issues of recruitment of Indian nationals in the Russian army and cyber crime trafficking of citizens in Southeast Asian countries.
‘The issue was taken seriously’
According to Jaishankar, a total of 91 Indian citizens have been reported to have been recruited in the Russian army, of which eight have died, 14 have been discharged or sent back and 69 citizens are awaiting their release from the Russian army. He said, “We take this issue very seriously. I myself have raised it several times with the Russian Foreign Minister.”
this is the biggest problem
The Foreign Minister told the House that Prime Minister Modi had also raised this issue during his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow last month. The minister said that the problem is that Russian officials say that these Indian citizens have signed contracts to serve with the Russian army. Jaishankar said that in many cases there are indications that our citizens were misled and they were told that they were going for some other job and then they were recruited in the Russian army.
Assurance received from President Putin
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said that the Prime Minister got assurances from Putin that any Indian citizen serving in the Russian army will be decommissioned. India’s stand on this entire matter is already clear and the issue has been raised with Russia.
