The Railway Ministry does not maintain separate records of earnings from Vande Bharat trains. This information has been given in response to an application filed under the Right to Information (RTI) Act. Chandrashekhar Gaur, a resident of Madhya Pradesh, wanted to know how much revenue the Railway Ministry has earned from Vande Bharat trains in the last 2 years and whether there is any profit or loss from their operation. The Railway Ministry said in its reply, “Revenue records are not maintained train wise.”
The first Vande Bharat train ran on 15 February 2019.
Vande Bharat is the country’s first semi-high speed train which was flagged off between New Delhi and Varanasi on February 15, 2019. Today 102 Vande Bharat trains run on 100 routes through 284 districts in 24 states and union territories. Railway officials said on Monday that more than two crore people have traveled by Vande Bharat train so far. Officials also said that the distance covered by Vande Bharat trains in the financial year 2023-24 is equivalent to circling the Earth 310 times.
Man expressed surprise at railway figures
Gaur expressed surprise and said that the Railways keeps records of the number of people traveling by Vande Bharat train and the distance covered by the respective trains, but does not keep the most important information regarding revenue generation. He said, “Railway officials can calculate the distance covered by Vande Bharat trains in a year equal to the total number of revolutions around the earth, but they do not have the calculation of the total revenue collected from these trains.”
‘It is very important to keep separate records of revenue position’
“It is very important for the Railways to keep a separate record of the revenue position of Vande Bharat trains as these are India’s first semi-high speed new generation trains and their profitability will establish the real popularity,” Gaur said. In response to another application under RTI filed in October last year, the Railways had said that overall, more than 92 percent seats are booked in Vande Bharat trains, which Railway officials consider to be an encouraging figure.
