New Delhi: The results of the presidential elections have come in Maldives. Once again the people of Maldives have expressed confidence in the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC). The party has secured a clear majority in Parliament, the election results were revealed on Sunday. Here people have elected President Mohammad Muizzu with an overwhelming majority. Mohammad Muizzu’s PNC won 66 of the 86 seats initially announced, enough for a super-majority in the 93-member Majlis, or Parliament.
Let us tell you that this election was very important for Muizu’s objective of strengthening economic relations with China. The PNC and its allies had only eight seats in the previous parliament, lacking a majority, disrupting Muizzu’s plans to win the presidency in September.

368 candidates stood for 93 seats in Parliament
After Muizzu’s election as President last year, Maldives tilted towards China, with the new leader adopting a pro-China stance and working to remove Indian troops stationed on an island in the country. It is known that six political parties and independent groups had fielded 368 candidates for 93 seats in Parliament. Muizzu, 45, was among the first to vote on Sunday, voting at a school in the capital Male and urging Maldivians to vote in large numbers.
Muizzu’s campaign issue was ‘India Out’
Muizzu’s campaign issue before his presidential election was ‘India Out’, in which he accused his predecessor of compromising national sovereignty. Let us tell you that Maldives’ relations with India became more tense when people on Indian social media started a campaign to boycott Maldives tourism. This was against three Deputy Ministers of Maldives making derogatory statements about Prime Minister Narendra Modi for raising the idea of promoting tourism in Lakshadweep.
