Relief material arriving in Gaza (symbolic)
Washington: The United Nations World Food Program (UN-WFP) on Wednesday said it has started sending relief goods to Palestinian civilians in Gaza through a US-built ferry. In the first batch of packages, nutrition-rich biscuits have been handed over to Gaza. Although the quantity of these biscuits is not much. WFP spokesman Steve Taravella said a small number of biscuits arrived in the first batch that was unloaded from the wharf on Friday. The US Agency for International Development told ‘The Associated Press’ that a total of 41 trucks loaded with aid material worth more than $320 million have been delivered to humanitarian organizations in Gaza.
US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan told reporters on Thursday that “aid is coming” from the port, but not at that rate.
Earlier on Tuesday, Pentagon spokesman Maj. Gen. Patrick Ryder told reporters he did not believe any aid from the port had yet reached people in Gaza. Sullivan said a day later that some aid had been delivered “specifically to Palestinians who need it.
23 lakh people are yearning for food
According to aid groups, all 2.3 million people in Gaza are in dire need of food. The heads of WFP and USAID have said that famine has set in in northern Gaza. The WFP warned this week that the US project could fail if Israeli authorities did not approve alternative land routes and provide better security and support. Israel says it is not imposing any restrictions on the number of trucks entering Gaza and has accused aid groups of “lack of transportation capabilities and a shortage of manpower.” (AP)
