Chennai. The family of a Tamil Nadu corporation employee had to struggle for ten months for a compensation of Rs 25 lakh announced by the state government. Last year, this employee died due to COVID-19. Ramesh (50), an employee of Tiruchi Corporation, died on 9 May 2021 due to COVID-19. His family cremated the body without obtaining a COVID-19 death certificate.
Due to this, the doctors of the hospital refused to give the COVID death certificate as the cremation had already taken place, due to which Ramesh’s family received the compensation amount of Rs 25 lakh announced by the Tamil Nadu government for the employees who died due to COVID-19 related illness. Had to wander from door to door to do so.
However, even after knocking on several doors, the family could not secure the certificate and compensation. Ramesh’s wife Nirmala and his brother-in-law Varatharajan met several officials but their efforts went in vain.
Speaking to -AnyTV News, Vartharajan said, “It was a difficult time and we were running around to get their compensation as the family is in great distress after the death, and their family is entitled to compensation as per the government rules. Though the doctors refused to give the certificate, things were not working and when we contacted the media and the report came out, the government took action, and now the amount has been sanctioned.”
The amount was sanctioned on February 21, 2022 and the family received a check of Rs 25 lakh from the state government.
Ramesh’s wife Nirmala, while talking to -AnyTV News, said, “We were wandering from door to door to get the certificate, finally we got the required papers to support the media. After the news reports came, the files moved quickly. And on February 21, we got a check of Rs.25 lakh as compensation. I am grateful to the media in Tamil Nadu as well as the Tamil Nadu government for allowing the compensation amount to the families of those who died of Covid.”
Nirmala said that she would use the amount to provide good education to her children and said that she thanked the Tamil Nadu government for the assistance provided in the form of compensation amount.
