On the nameplate dispute, Justice Bhatti narrated the story of two shops in Kerala.

The Yogi government of UP had ordered that all the hotels, dhabas and carts on the Kanwar route will write their name and mobile number in bold letters on their shops. Yogi had given this order regarding the faith of the Kanwariyas but the opposition made it a Hindu Muslim issue. Today, there was a heated debate in the Supreme Court on the petition, after which the country’s top court has put an interim stay on the nameplate rule. The Supreme Court said that shopkeepers do not need to reveal their identity.

The Supreme Court said that shopkeepers cannot be forced to reveal their names. Hotel owners will only have to provide information about the type of food, i.e. whether it is vegetarian or non-vegetarian. The police has misused its power in this case. Its order is against the Constitution and legal procedures. The order to install nameplates on shops is discriminatory.

At the same time, let us tell you that during the hearing, Supreme Court Justice SV Bhatti, while advocating cleanliness in restaurants, said that during his posting in Kerala, he often visited a vegetarian restaurant run by a Muslim because international standards were followed there. Justice Bhatti shared this experience when he, along with Justice Rishikesh Roy, on Monday put an interim stay on the instructions of the Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand governments regarding displaying the names of the owners of restaurants located on the Kanwar Yatra route.

Why did Justice Bhatti go to Muslim restaurants?

Justice Bhatti said, “I have my own experience and knowledge when I was in Kerala. I cannot tell openly because I am a sitting judge of this court. Without naming the city, there was a vegetarian hotel run by a Hindu. There was another vegetarian hotel run by a Muslim.” He said, “While being a judge of that state, I used to go to the hotel run by that Muslim man for vegetarian food. As far as food standards and safety are concerned, he used to demonstrate everything. He had returned from Dubai. He was following international standards regarding safety, hygiene and cleanliness, so I preferred to go to that hotel.” (With Bhasha inputs)
