‘I went and met Justice Sen…’ How CJI Chandrachud became a judge, he himself told the whole story

When CJI Chandrachud smiled while rejecting the petition, he said this big thing

Supreme Court Chief Justice DY Chandrachud is often in the headlines for his decisions and statements. Many comments of CJI Chandrachud immediately make news. Something similar came to light on Saturday, where CJI DY Chandrachud told the story of his becoming a judge.

CJI DY Chandrachud said at the inauguration of the national conference on the use of technology in the courts of the country, ‘In 1998, when I was invited to become a judge in the Bombay High Court, I was apprehensive about it and I consulted many knowledgeable people whether I should accept it or not’.

‘There is a difference between a judge and a lawyer…’
Along with this, he told, ‘One of the knowledgeable people I contacted was Justice AP Sen, who had written the decision of ADM Jabalpur. He invited me to his Nagpur residence. He told me that there is a difference between a judge and a lawyer. A judge always leaves his marks on the sand and those marks are the words written by you. No matter how brilliant arguments the lawyer gives, they are lost for the future generations…’

At the same time, CJI DY Chandrachud further said, ‘This is a unique conference organized by the Punjab and Haryana High Court to discuss various aspects of technology including Artificial Intelligence. Judges from all over the country have come here and I think this will be a very important initiative to carry the message of the Indian judiciary of access to justice to the common citizens…’

CJI Chandrachud also said, ‘Technology should be a medium to ensure ‘justice at everyone’s doorstep’… The third phase of e-court is starting now, the central government has given about Rs 7,000 crore to all the state governments, which I think will strengthen the information infrastructure again…’

During this, when journalists questioned CJI DY Chandrachud about the three new criminal laws, he said, ‘The challenge against these laws is pending in the Supreme Court, it would not be appropriate for me to say anything about it.’
