Anuj Gautam/Sagar: Snake bites are common in India. It happens especially in rural areas. If the snake bite is not treated immediately and properly, it can have serious consequences. The special thing is that during the incident, home remedies like applying salt, chilli, black pepper or biting and sucking blood are often advised. But are these really effective? Experts have given accurate information on this.
Dr Manish Jain, Department of Zoology (Sagar) said that applying salt, chilli or black pepper on snake bite does not reduce the effect of the venom. These home remedies are not only ineffective. They also increase the risk of skin irritation and infection. Similarly, sucking blood after biting is also wrong. It not only fails to remove the venom completely. It can also lead to infection and other complications.
What to do first
1.keep calm and don’t panic: Try to keep the bitten person calm. Panic increases the heart rate. Due to which the poison spreads rapidly.
2.Reduce agitation: Move the bitten part as little as possible. Use a support to keep it still. This reduces the spread of the poison.
3.keep the bitten area clean: Wash the bitten area with clean water and soap, but do not rub it.
4.Seek medical help as soon as possible: Do not rely on any home remedy and immediately go to the nearest medical center or hospital. The correct and effective treatment for snake bite is antivenom (anti-snake venom), which can only be given by a medical professional.
what not to do
Dr. Manish Jain told that there are some things that should not be done in case of snake bite:
1.do not bite and suck blood: This does not help in removing the poison. Rather, the risk of infection increases.
2.Do not use salt, pepper, black pepper or other household ingredients: This can cause irritation and infection at the bitten area.
3.do not use a tourniquet: This can stop blood flow. This can damage the organ.
4.do not drink alcohol or any other liquids: This can make the person’s condition worse.
