If blood sugar level stops at 120 mg/dL: Diabetes is a disease which if not controlled, weakens the body. Mainly three types of tests are done for diabetes but in normal conditions, the first test is done for fasting blood sugar. In this, a blood sample is taken on an empty stomach in the morning and the amount of sugar in it is checked. Fasting blood sugar should be less than 100 mg/dL in a normal person but in some people it reaches 120. In such a situation, people start getting scared whether they are diabetic or not. Regarding this question, News 18 spoke to famous consultant endocrinologist and dermatologist at Max Healthcare Gurgaon. Diabetologist Dr. Paras Agarwal talked to.
No fasting sugar, complete sugar test is required
Dr. Paras Aggarwal told that there are three-four main tests to check sugar. First fasting blood sugar is tested. After this, the test is done two hours after eating. Then there is a random test. Actually, there is a possibility of error in all these tests. For example, if someone goes to get fasting blood sugar tested after exercising, then this test can be wrong. Similarly, if someone drinks milk at night and goes to sleep and gets fasting sugar tested in the morning, then it can be wrong. Therefore, to find out whether someone really has diabetes or not, we get a complete sugar panel test done. In this, we mainly look at three types of tests. Fasting blood sugar, post meal sugar and HB1AC test. If the test is correct in these three tests, then on that basis we decide whether someone has diabetes or not.
If it does not cross 120 then
Dr. Paras Agrawal told that as far as the question is that if someone’s fasting blood sugar really goes up to 120 mg/dL, then is it diabetes or not. Dr. Paras Agrawal told that there are many conditions in this too. If it reaches 120 or 125 and does not go beyond that but the level of HB1AC is less than 6.5 percent, then it is not diabetes but it is definitely a pre-diabetic condition. This is a kind of warning that you should be careful or else there will be a lot of trouble later. Therefore, if the fasting blood sugar reaches 120 to 125, then immediately change your lifestyle.
When will you be considered diabetic?
Dr. Paras Aggarwal He told that the cut-off mark of fasting blood sugar level is 126. If the blood sugar level is below this and post meal and Hb1ac are even slightly higher, then we will not consider him a diabetic patient. But if it is even one more than this cut-off mark, then it is diabetes. In that case, the patient is immediately advised to start diabetes medicine. Then you need to get tested regularly.
if it does not exceed 120
If the fasting blood sugar level of some people does not exceed 120, then it can be corrected. Dr. Paras Agarwal said that to prevent blood sugar from reaching above 120 mg/dL, it is important that you follow a healthy diet and active lifestyle from now on. Start exercising daily first. Eat green leafy vegetables daily. Half of your plate should always be green vegetables and fresh fruits. After this there should be whole grains and pulses. Increase the intake of dry fruits and seeds in the diet. Keep yourself active by walking, running, cycling, swimming etc. Do not take stress and get enough sleep. Along with this, drink enough water and do not consume junk food, fast food, processed food and cigarettes, alcohol.
