Leaders attending opposition meeting
The ruling party and the opposition are face to face over the post of Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the Lok Sabha. Although the ruling party has the majority and the post of Speaker may go to the ruling party. But the opposition has also fielded its candidate for the post of Speaker. The election of who will be the Speaker among the two, Om Birla of the ruling party or K Suresh of the opposition, will be held today at 11 am. If the opposition gets the post of deputy speaker, we will support
Congress and other opposition parties said that according to tradition, the post of Deputy Speaker of Lok Sabha should go to the opposition and if the government agrees on this, then they will support the government for the post of Speaker. Congress said that the ball is now in the government’s court to build a consensus on this issue because according to tradition, the post of Deputy Speaker should go to the opposition.
The election for the post of Speaker will be held on Wednesday morning and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has enough numbers to win the election. Congress leaders K.C. Venugopal and Deepender Hooda said the ball was still in the government’s court which could give the Deputy Speaker’s post to the opposition. Hooda said if the government decides to give the Deputy Speaker’s post to the opposition, the opposition can still withdraw from the election in favour of Birla.
TMC has a different tune, what did Abhishek Banerjee say
On the other hand, Trinamool MP Abhishek Banerjee had created an uncomfortable situation for the Congress by making a statement on Tuesday afternoon that his party was not consulted on nominating Kodikunnil Suresh of the Congress as the joint candidate of ‘India’ for this post. He had also said that party chief Mamata Banerjee will take a decision on supporting Suresh. Abhishek Banerjee had said, “Nobody contacted us. There was no conversation, unfortunately this is a unilateral decision.”
