Majuli: Expressing confidence of winning from Jorhat Lok Sabha seat, Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi said that if the number of photographs taken by people with him is converted into votes, then BJP MP Topon Kumar Gogoi will definitely lose. Let us tell you that Gogoi, Congress MP from Kaliabor, is contesting from Jorhat this time. He spent two days in Majuli, the world’s largest river island located in the middle of the Brahmaputra, and addressed 12 street meetings in the district.
Challenge is not easy for Gaurav in Jorhat
Majuli was earlier part of the Lakhimpur Lok Sabha constituency, but was added to Jorhat in the delimitation conducted by the Election Commission last year. Jorhat was once the constituency of Gaurav’s father and former Chief Minister late Tarun Gogoi, people here changed their mind in 2014, due to which Congress was defeated. There is a considerable population of Ahom, Thengal-Kachari, Mising and tea working tribes here. After Gogoi’s Kaliabor seat was renamed Kaziranga in the delimitation, he was pitted against the BJP in Jorhat, which has become a stronghold of the ruling party in the last 10 years.
‘Hardly any promise of BJP has been fulfilled’
Gaurav is hoping to create an emotional connect with voters, especially the youth. Although Congress had lost this seat by more than 82,000 votes in the 2019 elections, it is not easy to bridge this gap. Gogoi said among his supporters on Wednesday, ‘I am overwhelmed by the love you have given me. If all the photographs and selfies you have taken with me are converted into votes, BJP will lose by a huge margin. Taking aim at BJP, he claimed that it has been making a lot of promises before every election, but hardly any of them have been fulfilled.
‘The condition of farmers is worsening’
Gaurav Gogoi alleged, ‘Government schools and colleges are closing, prices of medicines are increasing, prices of essential commodities are at an all-time high and the condition of farmers is worsening. Majuli is facing massive erosion, but the BJP government is doing nothing. The way you are meeting me now, I will be with you even after winning. I will always stand by you in your bad days. Voting for Jorhat and 4 other seats in Upper Assam will be held in the first phase on April 19. (Language)
