New Delhi, May 8 (IANS)| WhatsApp, which is facing criticism over its upcoming privacy policy, has said that users’ WhatsApp accounts will not face any problems from May 15 and will not face curtailed functionalities if they fail to accept the new norms by time. They will have to go through a limited number of tasks afterwards. The Facebook-owned messaging platform, with over two billion users in India with over 400 million users, had warned that failing to accept the new policy would result in users losing some functionality following “frequent reminders”.
WhatsApp said in the FAQ, “After giving everyone time to review, we continue to remind those who haven’t had a chance to review and accept them. After a period of several weeks, people who have received the reminder will be permanent.”
After frequent reminders, users will face limited functionality on WhatsApp until the update is accepted.
This will not happen for all users at the same time. After a few weeks of limited functionality, you will no longer be able to receive incoming calls or notifications and WhatsApp will stop sending messages and calls to your phone.
However, if you do not accept the update, WhatsApp will not delete your account. “No account of WhatsApp will be deleted or functional as on May 15,” the company informed.
For the past several weeks, WhatsApp has been displaying a notification to its users to provide them with more information about the update. Raising concerns over the change in WhatsApp’s privacy policy, the Union Ministry of Electronics and IT had asked the messaging platform to roll back the recent change, with several industry groups questioning the sharing of WhatsApp users’ data with Facebook. .
