New Delhi: The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has written a letter to PM Modi regarding the Kolkata case. In the letter, they have demanded PM Modi to bring a central law to stop violence against health workers and declare hospitals as safe zones with mandatory security rights. Let us tell you that a case of rape and murder of a female doctor came to light in Kolkata. At the same time, after this incident, angry people also vandalized RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata. At present, in protest against this entire incident, IMA has called for a nationwide shutdown of non-emergency services for 24 hours from 6 am on Saturday.

IMA put forward five demands

IMA has written a letter to PM Modi and put forth its five demands. IMA said in a statement that all essential services are being continued and personnel have been deployed in the emergency ward. IMA said, “The victim used to work in a 36-hour shift. There is a need for a comprehensive change in the working and living conditions of resident doctors due to lack of safe space to rest and adequate toilets.” IMA has also demanded that hospitals be declared safe zones, in which the first step should be mandatory security rights. The apex organization of doctors said, “Security protocols in hospitals should not be less than airports. Declaring hospitals as safe zones with mandatory security rights is the first step. CCTV cameras, deployment of security personnel and protocols can be followed.”

Demand for central law

The IMA has also demanded a central law to protect doctors. The IMA demanded a careful and professional investigation of the crime and delivery of justice within a stipulated time frame, identification of those involved in the vandalism and severe punishment for those involved. “The RG Kar incident has brought to the fore two dimensions of hospital violence: crime of a barbaric scale due to lack of safe spaces for women and hooliganism due to lack of organised security protocols. The crime and vandalism have shaken the conscience of the nation,” the IMA said.

60 percent of Indian doctors are women

The IMA also appreciated the Prime Minister’s comments about the safety of women in his Independence Day address. The IMA said, “We appeal to you to intervene at this time. This will give confidence not only to women doctors but to every woman working at the workplace.” The IMA said that 60 percent of Indian doctors are women. The IMA said that women constitute 68 percent of the dental profession, 75 percent in physiotherapy and 85 percent in nursing. The doctors’ body said that all healthcare professionals should get a peaceful environment, safety and security at the workplace. The IMA said, “We are appealing for your intervention to ensure appropriate measures to meet our demands.” (Input- Avinash Tiwari)
