New Delhi. The Supreme Court has directed the Central Government to release 17 foreign nationals kept in detention centers in Assam. The Supreme Court has said that no crime has been registered against foreign nationals. The State Legal Services Authority presented a report in this matter in the Supreme Court. The report says that 17 foreign nationals have been detained in Assam. The Supreme Court said that India should take steps to release the 17 foreign nationals as soon as possible as there are no criminal cases registered against them.
The Supreme Court said that many foreign nationals have been detained in detention centers for years and their condition is worsening. In April, the court had asked the State Legal Services Authority to provide information about the foreigners detained for two years. During that time, the court had directed the authority to form a team to visit the detention centers and gather information about the facilities provided to foreign nationals. The petition demanded the release of foreign nationals who have been detained in detention centers in Assam for more than two years.
The bench of Justices AS Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan was hearing the case related to the condition of detention centers in Assam. Where people of doubtful citizenship and considered foreigners were kept in custody. The court ordered the immediate deportation of 17 declared foreigners against whom no criminal charges had been filed. 4 such foreigners were kept in custody for more than a period of 2 years.

During the hearing, Justice Oka said that such foreigners have been detained even though there is no pending case registered against them. The Government of India should take immediate action to send them back. The bench said in a lighter vein that the budget used to provide facilities to such declared foreigners could have been used for other welfare activities for Indian citizens.
