Jaipur. There was a unique demonstration across the country on Wednesday night in protest against the Waqf Amendment Act. People of Muslim community in many cities of Rajasthan including Jaipur lodged their protest by keeping the electricity of their homes, shops and institutions voluntarily from 9 pm to 9:15 pm. The peaceful ‘Blackout Protest’ was done on the appeal of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), which was supported by several Muslim organizations including AIMIM chief and MP Asaduddin Owaisi. People in Muslim -dominated areas including Ramganj, Ghatgate, Shastri Nagar, Jhotwara, Paharganj in Jaipur joined this protest campaign by shutting off electricity on time. Although people did not turn off the power in some places, the overall protest was seen to be a widespread impact.
In Udaipur’s Mallatlai, Savina, Khanjipir and other Muslim areas, people also expressed their displeasure with the Waqf Amendment Act by shutting down their displeasure. The protesters said that this law weakens the rights and management of Waqf properties and interference in religious freedom.
Not only Rajasthan, in states like Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra, Bengal, the Muslim community also supported this campaign. The specialty of this peaceful protest was that there was no demonstration on any kind of slogan or roads, but also an attempt to convey to the government by symbolically shutting off power that this law was not accepted to them.
According to the recent proposals in the Waqf Amendment Act, there is dissatisfaction in the community about the revision, documentation and government interference of Waqf properties. Muslim organizations say that this will weaken the rights of religious, educational and social institutions of the community and will affect the autonomy of the Waqf Board.
At present, there has been no official response from the central government to this protest, but this peaceful demonstration indicates that there is an increasing concern and disagreement in the Muslim community over the Waqf law.
