Lok Sabha elections 2024 phase 5: Voting was held on May 20 in the fifth phase for Rae Bareli Lok Sabha seat, which is called the VIP seat of Uttar Pradesh. Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi is contesting from this traditional seat of the Gandhi family. BJP has fielded Dinesh Pratap Singh and BSP has fielded Thakur Prasad Yadav against him. A total of 8 candidates are contesting the elections. There is an alliance between Congress and Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh, hence Rahul Gandhi is in direct competition with BSP and BJP.
At one time, Amethi in UP was also the stronghold of the Gandhi family. Till 5.30 pm, 52.68 percent voting took place here. In the last election, 54.08 percent votes were cast here. Sanjay Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Satish Sharma, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi have been MPs from Amethi. In the last election, BJP’s Smriti Irani had won by razing this stronghold of the Gandhi family.
There are a total of 21 lakh, 45 thousand, 820 voters in Rae Bareli Lok Sabha seat. Of these, the number of male voters is 11.20 lakh and the number of female voters is 10.25 lakh. By 5:30 pm, 56.26 percent voting had taken place. There is a possibility of it increasing further. In 2019 also, a total of 56.34 percent votes were cast here.
According to our Rae Bareli correspondent Mohan Krishna, BJP and Congress are making their own claims regarding the voting figures. BJP leaders claim that the slogan of ‘Our booth is the strongest’ came to fruition and the Panna Pramukh and the booth in-charge were successful in motivating a large number of voters to vote. If BJP leaders are to be believed then this voting goes in favor of BJP. Whereas, Congress leaders claim that last time some voters were in a state of confusion regarding incidents like Pulwama, but this time due to the absence of any kind of confusion, voters came out in large numbers and supported Rahul Gandhi.
The percentage of voting in 13 seats of Uttar Pradesh has also been recorded at 55.85 percent till 5.30 pm. This may increase further by a few percent.
Voting percentage in Rae Bareli
Talking about the voting percentage in the elections held in Rae Bareli Lok Sabha seat, a total of 56.34 percent voting i.e. 959,022 votes were cast here in the 2019 elections. Sonia Gandhi won with 5,34,918 votes, 55.80 percent of the total votes. In front of him, BJP’s Dinesh Pratap Singh got 38.36 percent 3,67,740 votes.
In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, 51.73 percent i.e. 8,25,142 people had used their votes in Rae Bareli seat. Congress’s Sonia Gandhi got 63.80 percent (5,26,434 votes) of the total votes. BJP’s Ajay Aggarwal came at second place. He got 21.05 percent 1.73 lakh votes. Sonia Gandhi won this election by a record 3,52,713 votes. Bahujan Samaj Party candidate got only 7.71 percent of 63,633 votes. Aam Aadmi Party’s Archana Srivastava had to be satisfied with just 1.16 percent of 10,383 votes.
In the elections of 2009 and 2004, only 48 percent voting took place here. And Congress candidate Sonia Gandhi got 72.23 percent (4,81,490) and 58.75 percent (3,78,107) votes respectively.
SP MLAs came in support of BJP
Many interesting incidents took place during the elections on Rae Bareli seat. In one incident, rebel Samajwadi Party MLA Manoj Pandey also came in support of BJP candidate Dinesh Pratap Singh. Samajwadi Party has control over 4 out of 5 assembly seats of Rae Bareli Lok Sabha seat.
Traditional seat of Gandhi family
Rae Bareli has been the old seat of the Gandhi family. This seat came into existence in 1952. Firoz Gandhi was elected from here in the elections of 1952 and 1957. In 1960, RP Singh won on Congress ticket and Baijnath Kuril won in 1962 by-election. In the Lok Sabha elections of 1967 and 1971, the country’s only woman Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was elected MP from here.
In the Lok Sabha elections held in 1977 after the Emergency, Rae Bareli seat left the Congress and went to Raj Narayan of the Janata Party.
In 1980, Indira wave once again came in the country and she won the elections from here. Arun Nehru was elected MP from Rae Bareli seat in the by-elections held in 1980 and the general elections of 1984. Indira Gandhi’s maternal aunt Sheela Kaul won from here in the elections of 1989 and 1991.
In the 1996 Lok Sabha elections, Congress lost its hold on Rae Bareli seat and BJP’s Ashok Singh became MP. Even in 1998, this seat remained with BJP. In 1999, Congress’ claws again strengthened their hold in Rae Bareli and Satish Sharma was elected MP. Sonia Gandhi won from here continuously in the five Lok Sabha elections held from 2004 to 2019. This time Sonia Gandhi chose to leave Rae Bareli and go to Rajya Sabha from Jaipur. In the absence of Sonia Gandhi, her son Rahul Gandhi has contested elections from here. However, Rahul Gandhi has also contested from Wayanad seat in Kerala.
