Rohit Sharma
After the humiliating defeat in the ODI series against Sri Lanka, Indian captain Rohit Sharma has stressed on the importance of domestic cricket. Team India won the T20I series on the Sri Lanka tour but had to face defeat by 0-2 in the ODI series. After 1997, Sri Lanka managed to defeat Team India in an ODI series for the first time. After this crushing defeat, Rohit Sharma talked about the importance of tournaments like Ranji Trophy for selection in the Test team. Along with this, the Indian captain stressed on every player participating in domestic cricket despite the success of IPL so that talent can be honed.
“Our goal has always been that the players who are available play Ranji Trophy. Our domestic cricket is the backbone of our international cricket. A lot of players who are representing the country now have come up playing domestic cricket, so our domestic cricket is important for everyone. We want to make sure it stays competitive,” Rohit said in the post-match conference.
IPL is also a tournament of India
He said, “We get players from the domestic circuit and not from the IPL. When you select players for Test and ODI cricket, there is a lot of discussion on who is performing well in the Ranji Trophy, ODI format, Syed Mushtaq Ali and other such competitions.”
Furthermore, the Indian captain spoke about the IPL and highlighted his challenges of the tournament. He said that IPL is also India’s tournament and one has to perform well in every domestic tournament to get selected for India. He said, “IPL, of course, is a format where the challenges are different. It is the competition of both. IPL is also our cricket – it is the Indian Premier League (IPL). At the end of the day, whoever performs well in all these tournaments will eventually be selected.”
