United Nations . India on Thursday abstained from voting for the sixth and seventh time in the General Assembly, maintaining its stance of abstaining from Ukraine-related resolutions in the United Nations.
The General Assembly approved a resolution on the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine proposed by that country criticizing Russia’s role, but it turned down another proposal by South Africa that did not mention Moscow .
Permanent Representative of India T.S. Tirumurti told the emergency session of the assembly that New Delhi avoided the resolution proposed by Ukraine as it “does not fully reflect” India’s expected focus on “end of hostilities and immediate humanitarian aid”.
A resolution blaming Russia for the humanitarian crisis proposed by Ukraine, with the support of nearly 90 countries, was passed with 140 votes, with five opposing and 37 abstaining.
That was more than the two-thirds majority needed to pass.
On a procedural matter raised by Ukraine, the Assembly voted not to take up South Africa’s proposal to effectively abolish it.
It called for humanitarian aid, a ceasefire, and safe corridors for refugees and aid, but without criticizing Russia.
At least 65 countries were against South Africa’s adoption of the proposal, while 49 wanted it to be voted on and 33 did not participate.
Tirumurti said humanitarian aid should be based on humanity, neutrality, fairness and independence and should not be politicised.
“We strongly believe that the efforts of the United Nations should contribute to reducing conflict, promoting dialogue and diplomacy to facilitate the immediate cessation of hostilities and the immediate end of people’s suffering,” he said. For this the parties should be brought together.”
Speaking to reporters after the vote, US Permanent Representative Linda Thomas-Greenfield said, “What I say, and what I said earlier, for countries that were already separate, there is no neutral ground here. We We are seeing every day what is happening in Ukraine and we have to stand with the people of Ukraine.”
