Colombo: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe jointly launched the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center on Thursday. This new initiative of India and Sri Lanka has worried China. Let us tell you that India has given a grant of 6 million dollars for the construction of the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center. Jaishankar reached Sri Lanka in the morning and met the President. Jaishankar said that he conveyed heartfelt greetings of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the President and discussed ways to further bilateral cooperation in the areas of power, energy, connectivity, port infrastructure, aviation, digital, health, food security, education and tourism.
In a post on the social media platform ‘X’, the External Affairs Minister said, “Honoured to meet Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe. Conveyed warm greetings from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to him. Appreciated the progress made on various bilateral projects and initiatives. “Jaishankar said in the post, “Discussed ways to enhance cooperation between India-Sri Lanka under the guidance of President Ranil Wickremesinghe, especially in the areas of power, energy, connectivity, port infrastructure, aviation, digital, health, food security, education and tourism. Committed to work for the continued development of our traditionally close and friendly relations. “The President’s Media Department (PMD) reported that the two leaders met at the Presidential Palace in Sri Lanka.

President Wickremesinghe and Jaishankar unveiled the plaque of the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Sri Lanka through digital medium and formally launched the centre. It includes a centre at the Naval Headquarters in Colombo, a sub-centre in Hambantota and unmanned installations in Galle, Arugambay, Batticaloa, Trincomalee, Kallarawa, Point Pedro and Mollikulam. After unveiling the plaque, Jaishankar said in a post on ‘X’, “With President of Sri Lanka Ranil Wickremesinghe, ministers and senior officials, digitally launched the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre and handed over 154 houses under the GOI housing scheme.” The President’s media department also gave information about the entire program on the post. Officials said that Jaishankar will also discuss the progress of all the ongoing Indian projects in Sri Lanka. He is also expected to discuss the preliminary preparations for Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Sri Lanka.
India’s policy is Neighbourhood First
The Foreign Minister may also meet Prime Minister Dinesh Gunwardene. Jaishankar was welcomed by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Tharaka Balasuriya and Eastern Province Governor Senthil Thondaman on his arrival in Colombo in the morning. Jaishankar said in a post on the social media platform ‘X’, “Reached Colombo on the first visit of the new term. Thanks to Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Tharaka Balasuriya and Eastern Province Governor Senthil Thondaman for the warm welcome.” He wrote that Sri Lanka is at the center of India’s ‘Neighbor First’ and ‘SAGAR’ policies. Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe was among the seven top leaders of India’s neighborhood and the Indian Ocean region who attended the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union Council of Ministers at Rashtrapati Bhavan on June 9.
