New BRICS Members
Moscow: India has welcomed the joining of Egypt, Iran, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Saudi Arabia and Ethiopia in the BRICS group. Representatives of these countries participated for the first time in an important BRICS meeting organized by Russia. Senior Indian diplomat Dammu Ravi led the Indian delegation at the meeting of foreign ministers of the member countries of the BRICS group held in Nizhny Novgorod in western Russia.
‘Welcome new members’
“An important meeting in the format of the extended BRICS grouping family. India warmly welcomes the new members,” External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in a post on X.
S Jaishankar could not go to Russia
The meeting on Monday was the first ministerial meeting after the expansion of BRICS in 2023. Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have become full members of the BRICS group. Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa are already its members. Usually foreign ministers attend such meetings. Since S Jaishankar was reappointed as the Foreign Minister on Monday itself after the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, he could not go to Russia to attend the meeting.
