Long jump veteran Murali Sreeshankar has been ruled out of the Paris Olympics due to a knee injury during training. He will have to undergo surgery due to which he will not be able to play the entire 2024 season. Asian Games and Commonwealth Games silver medalist Sreeshankar had qualified for the Paris Olympics by winning the silver medal at the 2023 Asian Athletics Championships with an effort of 8.37 metres. The 25-year-old was scheduled to start his season with two consecutive Diamond League competitions in Shanghai/Suzhou and Doha on April 27 and May 10 respectively, but he suffered an injury during training on Tuesday and his participation in the Olympics has been ruled out. The dream was broken.

Sreeshankar said in a social media post that unfortunately, it seems like a nightmare but it is the reality, my dream of Paris Olympics has been shattered. I suffered a knee injury during training on Tuesday, following tests and advice, it was decided that I would need to have surgery. Throughout my life, I have had the courage to face adversity, accepting situations that I cannot change. Working hard to achieve positive results in things where I can.
Big blow to India’s medal hopes in Olympics
In June last year, Sreeshankar became the third Indian to make it to the top three in the Diamond League competition by finishing third. Although he was disappointed with his exit from the qualifying round of the World Championships in Budapest, he made a strong comeback by winning a silver medal at the Asian Games in Hangzhou. Sreeshankar said that life writes strange stories and sometimes it takes courage to accept it and move forward. This is what I will do. My comeback journey started the moment I injured my knee. This road is going to be long, difficult and will take a lot out of me.
