New Delhi: In view of the current situation in Bangladesh, surveillance has been increased on the India-Bangladesh international maritime boundary line to thwart attempts of infiltration through sea routes. Information about this has been given by the Indian Coast Guard. The force said that so far ‘infiltration or any such activity’ has not been reported on the maritime border and ‘vigilant surveillance’ will continue in the maritime area until the situation stabilizes. This step has been taken after Sheikh Hasina resigned from the post of Prime Minister following anti-government protests in Bangladesh.
Increased surveillance in the sea
The Indian Coast Guard said in a statement, “In view of the recent political events and rapidly changing developments in Bangladesh, the Coast Guard has increased surveillance in the area and operational units have been suitably deployed to thwart any attempt of infiltration through sea routes.” According to the statement, “Surface surveillance has been enhanced by deploying Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) and Fast Patrol Vessels (FPVs) along the India-Bangladesh International Maritime Boundary Line.” The statement said, “All units deployed at sea have been advised to keep an eye on all fishing boats / identify those boarding them and Indian fishermen.”
Odisha government on alert
Let us tell you that earlier the Odisha government had also increased vigilance on its 480 km long coastline to prevent people from Bangladesh from entering India. The state of Odisha is located about 200 km from the Bangladesh coast. Regarding this, Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Sanjay Kumar had said, “People from Bangladesh used to enter Odisha illegally using small boats. Information received through various sources has revealed that many criminal elements have come out of jails during the unrest in Bangladesh. Those elements can try to infiltrate India. Stopping such people from entering India is a priority. We have put our 18 marine police stations on ‘high alert’.” (Language)
