The recent comments made by Maldivian ministers regarding Prime Minister Modi have drawn mixed reactions among Indian social media users, including the general public and big personalities including cricketers. Many cricketers like Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar, Aakash Chopra and Suresh Raina expressed disappointment over the behavior of Maldivian ministers and stressed on the beauty and potential of untouched places in India, drawing Indians from their country’s Andamans like Udupi, Pondicherry’s Paradise Beach. The Nile and Havelock Islands, and other stunning places are recommended for sightseeing.
Even though Sachin Tendulkar did not directly get involved in the Maldives-India issue, he highlighted the beauty of Sindhudurg in the Indian coastal city of Lakshadweep.. The discussion intensified when PM Modi shared pictures from his Lakshadweep visit on January 4. This started a trend on social media suggesting that Indians should consider Lakshadweep instead of Maldives for tourism. During this, Maldivian Minister Maria made some objectionable tweets targeting PM Modi and also made sarcastic remarks about Lakshadweep. Along with similar posts from other Maldivian leaders, this sparked anger among Indians.
Prominent Indian cricketers like Suresh Raina and Irfan Pathan expressed their disappointment over the hateful and racist comments made by Maldivians towards Indians. He highlighted India’s significant contribution to the Maldives’ economy, crisis management and expressed disappointment on hearing negative comments about his homeland.
