Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from participating in the 50kg freestyle wrestling final earlier this week. She was 100 grams overweight and her disqualification shocked many in India’s sports fraternity. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) also released an official statement confirming the incident and it left Indian fans saddened. The Indian athlete appealed against the disqualification and demanded a silver medal. The case is currently with the CAS, where Harish Salve has represented Vinesh and a decision is likely to come before the end of the Olympics.
Took retirement as soon as he was disqualified
After Vinesh was disqualified, Cuban wrestler Yusnelis Guzman reached the final despite losing to her in the semi-finals. She lost 3-0 to USA’s Sarah Hildebrandt for the gold medal and had to settle for a silver medal. Meanwhile, Vinesh Phogat announced her retirement the very next day after being disqualified and said that she had no courage left after losing a medal in the third consecutive Olympics. She wrote in her tweet that wrestling won the match from me, I lost… my courage is broken, now I have no strength. Goodbye wrestling 2001-2024. I will always be indebted to you.

Apart from this, gold medalist and six-time world champion, American wrestler Jordan Burroughs also came forward in support of Vinesh and urged United World Wrestling (UWW) to award Vinesh the silver medal, as well as change the weight at least for the final.
