During the last five months, 49 tigers have died in the country. Government figures show that most of the tigers who died were within the protected area. The death of one of these cubs has come to light only last week. The child has been found dead inside the Uttar Pradesh (Pilibhit) tiger reserve, while an adult tiger had died in the tiger reserve in Telangana earlier this month.
The Central Government has constituted the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) for the conservation of tigers. NTCA monitors such incidents and prepares detailed reports. Since the beginning of 2022, cases of death of tigers are coming to the fore in the country. The maximum number of deaths of 14 tigers was recorded in January.
After this, till April this figure has remained above 10. This is the second case of death in the tiger reserve during the month of May. Of the 49 tigers that died in the last five months, 30 were within the protected area. The NTCA report states that 49 tigers have been killed till May 2022. Among them were 12 females and 15 adults. Apart from this, 22 such tigers were also found which could not be identified.
Most of the dead tigers have been found within these protected areas. In the last year, 127 tigers died inside the country. They include the forest areas of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand and Madhya Pradesh. These forest areas have been established in the states in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment.
Tiger Reserves have been established to provide a long area for tigers to roam. With the help of this, along with rivers and mountains, tigers can move from one state to another. The 32 tiger corridors in the country are spread over an area of about 14,289.37 square kilometers, which is 1.62 percent of the country’s geographical area. Between 2011 and 2021, 37.15 km of forest area has increased in the country, which is an increase of 0.32 percent.
