Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi on Friday submitted his resignation to Governor Banwarilal Purohit following the defeat of the Congress in the assembly elections. The Channi-led cabinet recommended the dissolution of the assembly, paving the way for the formation of the Aam Aadmi Party-led government.
Channi, who went to Raj Bhavan to submit his resignation to the governor, told reporters a day after the results, “I have submitted my resignation to the governor.” The Aam Aadmi Party won 92 seats in the 117-member assembly, while the Congress was reduced to 18 seats. AAP also wiped out the Shiromani Akali Dal-Bahujan Samaj Party alliance. SAD got three seats while BJP got two and BSP got only one seat.

Many heavyweights including Channi, Parkash Singh Badal and Amarinder Singh had to face defeat in the assembly elections. Channi lost both the seats from where he contested. He was defeated by Labh Singh Ugoke of AAP by a margin of 37,558 votes from Bhadaur seat. He lost to Charanjit Singh of AAP by a margin of 7,942 votes from Chamkaur Sahib.
