Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke Mann ki Baat with the nation today. During this, Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned from Emergency to Kishore Kumar’s songs. PM Modi told how the rights of the people were snatched away during the Emergency. Prime Minister Modi on Sunday said attempts were made to “crush democracy” in India during the Emergency imposed in 1975.
PM Modi during Mann Ki Baat said, “During the emergency, all rights were taken away. Among these rights was the right to life and personal liberty guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution. At that time an attempt was made to crush democracy in India. The country’s courts, every constitutional institution, the press, everything was brought under control.”
PM Modi said, “The censorship was so strict that nothing could be published without approval. I remember when famous singer Kishore Kumar ji refused to praise the government, he was banned. He was not allowed on the radio. Thousands of arrests and atrocities occurred in spite of several attempts. The democratic values that have been ingrained in us over the centuries, the spirit of democracy that runs through our veins, had finally triumphed.
Prime Minister Modi said, “The people of India democratically removed the Emergency and re-established democracy. Such an example of defeating the dictatorial mindset in a democratic way is difficult to find in the whole world. As a soldier of democracy, I also had the privilege of being a witness to the struggle of the countrymen during the Emergency.
PM Modi also mentioned the famous woman cricketer Mithali Raj. During Mann Ki Baat, PM Modi said, “I would also like to discuss today one of India’s most talented cricketers, Mithali Raj. He announced his retirement from cricket this month, which left many sports fans emotional. Mithali Raj is not just an exceptional player but has also been an inspiration to many sportspersons. I wish Mithali Raj all the best for her future.”
