A special court in Indore has sentenced six people, including Congress Rajya Sabha MP and former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijay Singh, to one year’s rigorous imprisonment. Let us tell you that on Saturday, the special court has given this verdict in the case of beating of protesting workers of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) in Ujjain in the year 2011.
Apart from imprisonment, the court also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 each on all the six convicts. Special Judge Mukesh Nath convicted Digvijay and former Lok Sabha MP from Ujjain Premchand Guddu under sections 325 (intentionally causing grievous hurt) and 109 (abetment to assault) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). On the other hand, four others Anant Narayan, Jai Singh Darbar, Aslam Lala and Dilip Chaudhary were convicted under Section 325 and sentenced.
The court has acquitted three other accused in this old case. In which Congress MLAs from Tarana area of Ujjain district Mahesh Parmar, Mukesh Bhati and Hemant Chauhan have been acquitted due to lack of evidence. However, the special judge later immediately stayed the appeal made by all the six convicts, including Digvijay Singh. Along with this, he was ordered to be released on a bail of Rs 25,000 each.
After getting bail from the special court, Digvijay informed the media that he would go to the High Court in this matter. He said the FIR registered against me is “false”. “My name was not included in the original FIR as an accused but the police later included my name among the accused due to political pressure.
Digvijay is accused of instigating others to beat up BJYM worker Ritesh Khabia. According to the police, BJYM activists had tried to show black flags to Digvijay on July 17, 2011, when his convoy was passing through the Jiwajiganj area of Ujjain, protesting against different controversial statements made by him. According to the police, Digvijay, Guddu and others clashed with BJYM workers during the protests.
