Kathua. Akshay Sharma of a poor family of Duggan remained silent for eight years. Akshay Sharma, born with severed lips and palate, underwent surgery at the age of three, but still could not speak. Her parents were struggling with poverty and were unable to bear the cost of treatment, so they almost gave up the hope of listening to their son’s voice. In Jammu, Defense Public Relations Officer Lieutenant Colonel Sunil Bertwal said that everything changed when an army doctor serving in that area met Akshay. Impressed by the family struggle, he conducted a preliminary inquiry into Akshay and found that he could learn to speak with proper treatment. There was no such facility available in the remote village, so the army doctor himself studied speech therapy techniques and started working with Akshay in his free time.
Patiently he taught him sounds, then words and simple sentences at the end. After months of practice, Akshay started speaking with increasing confidence. When he first called his parents, he had tears in his eyes. It was not just a voice for him, but it was a miracle. The deep burial in his hearts had come alive. His house, which was once filled with silent prayers, is now echoing with Akshay’s voice.
The incident, which started with the kind work of a soldier, has touched the entire community. The compassion of the army doctor has left an indelible impression in Duggan, it reminds everyone that the army not only protects the boundaries, but also fills the hearts and arouses hope in the most unexpected moments where it is most needed.
