Paris Olympics 2024: The Olympics 2024 will be held in Paris, the capital of France, from 26 July to 11 August. India is eyeing to win as many medals as possible this time. A total of 6 Indian boxers have confirmed their place for this event. National women’s champion Jasmine Lamboria is the sixth Indian boxer to get the quota for the Paris Olympics. Earlier, Amit Panghal also secured the Olympic quota.
Jasmine Lamboria’s one-sided victory
National women’s champion Jasmine Lamboria (57 kg) qualified for the Paris Olympics by winning in contrasting fashion in her quarterfinal of the second World Qualification Boxing Tournament. Jasmine gave up her 60 kg category and challenged for the quota in the women’s 57 kg category and got the country a quota in this category. Jasmine easily defeated Mali’s Marine Kamara 5-0 in a one-sided quarterfinal. Panghal and Jasmine thus joined the quartet of boxers Nishant Dev (71 kg), Nikhat Zareen (50 kg), Preeti Pawar (54 kg) and Lovlina Borgohain (75 kg) who have made it to the Olympics.
Amit Panghal’s comeback with a bang
World Championship silver medallist Amit Panghal (51kg) made a comeback in a tough contest to beat China’s Chuang Liu 5-0 to book his berth for the second time in the Olympics. This was Panghal’s only chance to make it to the Paris Olympics and the Asian Games 2018 champion made the most of the opportunity. Panghal had lost his place in the national team due to the evaluation system of the Indian Boxing Federation. In his place, World Championship bronze medallist Deepak Bhoria was selected in the team who participated in the last two qualifying competitions. The biggest competition Panghal participated in after the Tokyo Olympics was the 2022 Commonwealth Games in which he won a gold medal.
