Bhubaneswar. Indian Coast Guard has successfully airlifted 11 fishermen stranded in Bay of Bengal off Pati Sonapur beach in Odisha’s Ganjam district amid inclement weather due to Cyclone Asani. Officials gave this information on Monday.
Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) P.K. Jena said that 11 fishermen in the boat from Vizag in Andhra Pradesh got stuck near Pati Sonpur beach in Ganjam district. They could not deal with the waves as their boat broke down in the sea near Pati Sonpur beach.
Jena said that soon after receiving information about the fishermen at 4.32 pm, they held discussions with Indian Coast Guard officials posted at Bhubaneswar and Paradip.
In a tweet, SRC said, the helicopter started taking off at 4.55 pm and all the 11 stranded people were rescued through helicopter operation till 6.15 pm. It was a major operation. An outstanding achievement by the Indian Coast Guard. Lightning fast response, perfect air defense and it was done so fast. Pride for the team.
Berhampur Sub-Collector Kirti Vasan V, who is supervising the operation in the field, said 11 fishermen had gone to Andhra Pradesh to buy fishing boats. They said that while returning, the sea condition had worsened, they were unable to return to the coast and were stuck in the sea, about 4-5 km deep.
He told that the mobile network was reaching there. That’s why the fishermen first informed their families about their situation. First the local fishermen tried to save them. However, they failed due to the high tide in the sea.
After that the local people reached the district administration. First, the Indian Coast Guard tried to conduct rescue operations by sea. They were unable to carry out the operation due to very bad sea conditions.
Later, the Indian Coast Guard launched an aerial operation and rescued all the fishermen within an hour, the sub-collector said. He said that all the rescued fishermen have been sent to local hospitals for necessary health check-up.
