The International Court of Justice has asked Russia to immediately stop its military operations in Ukraine. The CJI has issued this order after a 13-2 decision on the matter. During the voting, 13 countries were in favor that Russia should immediately stop military operations in Ukraine, while 2 voted against it. Justice Dalveer Bhandari, an Indian judge in the United Nations Court, voted in favor of a majority against Russia.
The United Nations court consists of 15 judges. ICJ President Joan E Donoghue (USA), Judge Peter Tomka (Slovakia), Judge Ronnie Abraham (France), Judge Mohamed Bennouna (Morocco), Judge Abdulkawi Ahmed Yusuf (Somalia), Judge Julia Cebutinde (Uganda), Justice Dalvir Bhandari ( India), Judge Patrick Lipton Robinson (Jamaica), Judge Nawaf Salam (Lebanon), Judge Iwasawa Yuji (Japan), Judge George Nolte (Germany), Judge Hilary Charlesworth (Australia) and Judge Ad-hoc Daudet voted in favor of the majority.
These two countries voted in favor of Russia
The two judges who voted in favor of Russia are Vice President Kirill Gevorgian (Russia) and Judge Sue Hankin (China). While the decisions of the International Court of Justice are binding, there have been cases where countries have ignored them, as the ICJ has no direct means to enforce its orders.
Who is Dalveer Bhandari?
This is the second term of Justice Dalveer Bhandari in the World Court. In 2012 he was elected for the first term which continued till 2018. He was re-nominated by India. He secured another term at the ICJ by defeating the UK nominee Justice Greenwood.
