The country’s first rail bullet train will run under the sea. It will run between Mumbai and Ahmedabad. For this, the construction work of tunnel has started between Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) and Shilphata in Maharashtra.
According to the Railways, out of the total 508.17 km long rail track, the tunnel will be of 21 km. Three tunnel boring machines will be used to build about 16 km of the tunnel and five km will be constructed through the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM). Out of this, the seven km long tunnel under the sea at Thane Creek will be the first ‘sea tunnel’ to be built in the country. Bullet train will run at a speed of 300 kilometers per hour in this tunnel built inside the sea.
BKC the only underground station
BKC will be the only underground station of the country’s much-hyped high-speed rail project. Despite being underground, the station will be illuminated with natural light.
two tracks in single tube
The seven kilometer long tunnel to be built across Thane Creek will be in a single tube. It will have two tracks for incoming and outgoing trains. The tunnel will be about 25 to 65 meters deep from the ground level and the deepest construction point will be 114 meters below Parsik Hill near Shilphata. Tunnel boring machines with cutter head of 13.1 meter diameter will be used for this project.
attention to nature
According to the Railways, full care will be taken of nature in the construction of the tunnel. There will be no harm to the bird sanctuary near Thane Creek. At the same time, mangroves will not be removed to make tunnels.
