The third ODI was played between India and Sri Lanka on Wednesday. India was trailing 0-1 in the series after two matches. Therefore, the third match had become a do or die situation. Sri Lanka batted first in this match and scored 248 runs for 7 wickets. In response, the Indian team collapsed for 138 runs.
The Indian team, which came out to chase the target of 249 runs, had a bad start. Opener Shubman Gill was out after scoring 6 runs. Rohit Sharma (35) and Virat Kohli (20) tried to handle the innings, but failed. Both the batsmen could not convert the good start into a big innings. After the dismissal of these two, it was just a scene of Aayaram Gayaram. Rishabh Pant was out after scoring 6, Shreyas Iyer 8, Axar Patel 2 and Shivam Dubey 9 runs.
Washington Sundar scored 30 and debutant Riyan Parag scored 15 runs. Kuldeep Yadav was dismissed after scoring six runs. Overall, there was not a single Indian batsman who could stay on the wicket and play. As a result, the Indian team was all out for 138 runs in just 26.1 overs.
Spinners took 9 wickets
Dunith Welalage took the most wickets for Sri Lanka. He sent five Indian batsmen back to the pavilion. Jeffrey Vandersay and Mahish Teekshna took two wickets each. One wicket went to Asitha Fernando. India gave 9 wickets to spinners. This was the third consecutive occasion in this series when 9 Indian batsmen gave wickets to spinners.
Avishka played an innings of 96 runs
Earlier, Sri Lanka scored 248 runs on the back of excellent innings by Avishka Fernando, Kusal Mendis and Pathum Nissanka. Avishka scored 96 runs in 102 balls. Kusal Mendis scored 59 runs in 82 balls. Nissanka scored 45 runs. Kamindu Mendis scored 23 runs in 19 balls. Riyan Parag, who was playing his debut match for India, took the maximum of 3 wickets. And no other Indian could take more than one wicket.
