Jakarta. A powerful 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck Indonesia’s North Sumatra province on Monday, but there were no immediate reports of casualties, officials said. The Meteorological, Climatology and Geophysics Agency said no tsunami was caused by the quake.
The quake, with its epicenter 161 km south-east of Nias Selatan district and at a depth of 25 km, occurred at 4.09 am, Xinhua news agency quoted the agency as saying.
The tremors were also felt in West Sumatra and Jambi provinces, according to the agency.
A 5 mm (modified Mercalli intensity) earthquake was felt in North Sumatra province, Nias Selatan district and Gunungsitoli city.
In West Sumatra province, 5 mm of intensity was felt in the provincial capital Padang, Siberat island and 3 mm in Padang Panjang city, Bukit Tinggi city, Pasman Barat district, Pasman district and Tua Pejat village of Mentawai island district, the agency said.
Two senior officials from the local disaster agency and the local search and rescue office confirmed that there were no immediate reports of casualties from the quake.
