Internet service restored after 10 days.

Dhaka: Mobile internet services were restored in violence-hit Bangladesh on Sunday after 10 days. Mobile internet services were banned to prevent the spread of fake news on social media amid violence in the country over the reform of the reservation system in government jobs. According to local newspapers, State Minister for Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Junaid Ahmed Palak announced at a press conference here that all users will be given 5 GB of internet free for three days after the services are restored. Mobile internet services were resumed at around 3 pm local time. According to the news, users of Robi, Grameenphone, Banglalink and other operators in Dhaka said that they could use the internet on their mobile phones around 3 pm.

Mobile internet services were shut down

The government had shut down mobile internet services on July 18 after violence escalated across the country. According to media reports, the minister had said at the time that the decision was taken “in view of the current crisis in the country and to prevent the spread of fake news on social media”. Regarding the use of social media platforms, Palak said that the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has sent letters to officials of social media platforms including Facebook, TikTok and YouTube. He said, “Their representatives have to come to Dhaka by July 31 to give clarification. Then, after discussing with them, we will take a decision.”

About 100 people died in the violence

Let us tell you that university students in Dhaka and other cities had demonstrated against the system of reserving public sector jobs for relatives of war heroes who fought for Bangladesh’s ‘Liberation War’ in 1971, which took a violent turn. Internet and mobile services were shut down after nationwide violence. According to local newspaper reports, more than 100 people have died in the violence. However, no official figures are available about the deaths. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday defended her decision to order a curfew after the violence, saying that strict measures were taken to ensure the safety of people’s lives and their property. However, the situation in Bangladesh returned to normal on Wednesday. (input language)
