Washington: Iran has also indirectly entered the US presidential election. The Federal Bureau of Investigation is now investigating allegations that sensitive documents of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign were stolen through cyber intrusion, and an attempt was also made to break into Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign. The campaign team of Republican presidential candidate Trump had said a few days ago that his campaign had been hacked through Iran. The FBI issued a brief statement on Trump’s case and said, “We can confirm that the FBI is investigating the matter.”
Evidence not provided
Donald Trump’s campaign team did not provide any specific evidence of Iran’s involvement, but the claim came shortly after Microsoft released a report detailing efforts by foreign agents to interfere in the US election in 2024. The report cited an example of an Iranian military intelligence unit in June “hacking a former senior adviser’s email account and sending an email containing a virus to a high-ranking presidential campaign official”. Two people familiar with the matter said Biden and Harris’ campaigns were also targeted in this suspected Iranian cyber breach and the FBI is investigating it.
What did Iran say?
Iran’s mission to the United Nations denied involvement when asked about the Donald Trump campaign’s claims. “We do not place any credence to such reports,” the mission said. “The Iranian government has no intention or motive to interfere in the US presidential election and it does not intend to do so,” the mission said.
