Dubai: Iran’s late President Ibrahim Raisi was buried on Thursday (March 23, 2024) at the country’s holiest Shia shrine. He died a few days ago in a helicopter crash along with the Foreign Minister and six others. Raisi is buried in a grave inside the Imam Reza shrine in Mashhad. The eighth Imam of the Shia community is buried in this shrine. Raisi is the first top government official to be buried in this shrine after the Islamic Revolution of 1979. He had previously taken charge of the shrine and a foundation associated with it.
Processions were taken out in most parts of Iran
Processions were held in most parts of Iran after the death of late President Ibrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash. The country’s foreign minister and six others were also killed in the accident. However, the crowd at his funeral was not as large as the funeral of Revolutionary Guard General Qassem Soleimani, who was killed in a US drone attack in Baghdad in 2020. People’s sentiments about Raisi could be a possible indication behind the low turnout at the funeral.
Raees government has been strict
Let us tell you that the Raisi government had taken strict action during the protests over the death of Mahsa Amini in 2022, due to which people were angry. Amini was detained for allegedly not wearing the hijab, which is mandatory for women in Iran. There was no mention of the actions taken during that period in state television and newspaper coverage. Not only this, Raisi’s involvement in the mass murder of about five thousand people at the end of the Iran-Iraq war was also never discussed. These could be the particles whose impact has been seen.
People seen wearing black clothes
Authorities had warned people against using any kind of public signs to express joy over Raisi’s death. Heavy security forces were deployed in Tehran. Thousands of people dressed in black were seen on Thursday morning on the main road of Raisi’s hometown Birjand city in Iran’s South Khorasan province bordering Afghanistan. Raisi has been buried in Imam Reza Dargah. This area has long been a religious place for Shia Muslims. (AP)
