Fighter Jets
Washington: About 12 F/A-18 fighter jets have been sent from the USS Theodore Roosevelt aircraft carrier to a military base in West Asia. The move is part of the Pentagon’s efforts to protect Israel and American troops from potential attacks by Iran and its allies. A US official said that 12 F/A-18 fighter jets and an E-2D Hawkeye reconnaissance aircraft took off from the US ship in the Gulf of Oman and arrived at an undisclosed military base on Monday.
How long will the planes remain deployed?
It is not yet clear how long the fighter jets will remain at the military base. The deployment of these aircraft has been done at a time when US officials have shared more details about the rocket attack on a military base in Iraq on Tuesday. Five American soldiers and two other employees were injured in this attack.
order to increase military presence
US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has ordered an increase in military presence in the region. Officials are concerned about the possibility of increased violence in West Asia in the wake of the assassination last week of a top Hezbollah commander in Lebanon and the Hamas chief in Iran. Israel is suspected of these killings. Hezbollah and Hamas have support from Iran.
Attacks on US military bases have increased
Five of the injured were being treated at al-Asad air base while two others were taken elsewhere, officials said, but all seven were in stable condition. Iran-backed Iraqi militias have resumed attacks on US military bases in Iraq and Syria in recent weeks. A military base in Jordan was attacked in late January, killing three American soldiers, prompting the US to retaliate. (AP)
