Minister Akhil Giri in West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s government is once again in the news. He misbehaved with a female officer. The video of his behavior went viral on social media. The opposition BJP posted this video on its ex account and asked Mamata Banerjee to take action. Meanwhile, after the controversy escalated, Akhil Giri has resigned from the post of Jail Minister, expressing regret over his behavior.
This is the same Akhil Giri who made objectionable remarks about the color of President Draupadi Murmu in 2022. After that incident, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had to apologize. After Giri’s remarks about Murmu, many tribal organizations came out to protest. Not only this, during the Lok Sabha elections, Giri had made very objectionable remarks about Governor CV Anand Bose.
Insulted the officer
The latest case is of insult of a woman forest ranger officer. On Saturday, a dispute heated up over shops being set up in the forest department premises in Tajpur of East Medinipur district. The forest department was getting the encroachment removed by these shopkeepers. Prison Minister Akhil Giri had an argument with a woman range officer over this. He even threatened to beat the woman officer with a stick. He even said that you are a servant of the government. Talk with your head down in front of us.
During this, the minister also used abusive language for the woman officer. Someone made a video of this incident and then this whole matter went viral on social media. BJP even demanded the arrest of the minister. After this, however, Giri said that I was angry and excited but my behavior was inappropriate. I should not have talked to any officer like this. But if I had not taken this situation then another situation would have arisen there.
TMC on the backfoot
After the controversy escalated, Trinamool state president Subrata Bakshi spoke to Jail Minister Akhil Giri over the phone and asked him to apologize to the woman officer and resign. Then Akhil Giri further said, “As a minister, I regret saying such things to the officer. I regret saying such things but I feel that I should have stood with the people of that area.”
Giri is a three-time MLA from Ramnagar assembly seat in East Midnapore. He has been winning continuously from here since 2011. He won with a decent margin in 2016 and 2011.
