Series from Netherlands will clash with IPL
The South African players will join their respective franchises in India after the series against the Netherlands on March 31 and April 2. No country avoids playing bilateral series during IPL. They know that players want to play IPL. Even Australia, New Zealand, England and West Indies support the Board of Control for Cricket in India. In a way, the IPL calendar is treated like an ICC event.
On the other hand, South Africa is playing the series in this manner for the second year in a row. Last year also he played Test series from Bangladesh. Although, then players had the freedom to choose IPL or country, but this time it is not so. South Africa’s argument is that it has not yet qualified for the World Cup and each and every match is very important for it.
South Africa has not been able to qualify for the World Cup
CSA has taken this step because it will have to beat Netherlands to qualify directly for the 2023 World Cup to be held in India later this year. Netherlands have fielded a strong team for this series. Last December, a day before the IPL auction, the BCCI had informed the franchises in a note on the availability of overseas players that the contracted South African players would be available till March 29, two days before the opening of the IPL. However, CSA Chief Executive Officer Foletsi Moseki revealed that an explanation has been provided to the BCCI as to why it was mandatory for South Africa’s contracted players to participate in the Netherlands series.
The top eight teams in the ODI Super League will automatically qualify for the 2023 World Cup, while the bottom five will play a World Cup qualifier with five associate teams. South Africa at number 9, while West Indies, Sri Lanka and Ireland are also fighting for direct qualification. “The BCCI understands the importance of the Netherlands series for us to automatically qualify for the 2023 World Cup,” Moseki said.
Three IPL teams whose exclusion can help India win the WTC final
This is not the first time that CSA has had to contend with a domestic bilateral series with the IPL. South Africa’s Test series against Bangladesh last March clashed with the start of the tournament, but CSA then asked the players to stay or go to India. The players opted to be fully available for the IPL, but this time CSA was left with no option but to field the best team as a World Cup spot was at stake.
