Breastfeeding week: There are many misconceptions about breast feeding. Some are transferred from generation to generation and some are based on someone’s personal experience. Many myths are far from facts. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there is a thin line between fact and fiction which is important to understand. Every year the theme of World Breastfeeding Week is different. This time the theme of Breast Feeding Week 2024 is ‘Closing the Gap – Breastfeeding Support for All’, which aims to make mothers aware so that they do not face any problem in feeding the child anywhere.
When it comes to family and society, some myths also come to the fore, which have nothing to do with facts. The elders of the house tell the new mom to eat simple food, stay away from exercise, breastfeeding the baby is a very easy task and much more. But what do gynecologists and WHO think? Let’s know in this news…
Dr. Tripti Raheja, Gynecologist and Chief Consultant at CK Birla Hospital, said that modern women are most concerned about their figure. Physical changes occur due to age, genetics and hormonal changes. It has nothing to do with breast feeding. The second myth is one that has been prevalent since the times of our grandmothers. People generally think that breastfeeding is an easy task. WHO believes that this is not an easy task. There are problems in the beginning. Breastfeeding requires time and practice for both mothers and babies. Breastfeeding also takes time, so mothers need the help of their loved ones.
Dr Raheja also denies the myth about exercise. She says that it is completely wrong to think that a lactating mother should not exercise. The World Health Organization also believes the same. It says that there is no evidence that the quality of milk of mothers who exercise is affected.
Is it necessary to follow a strict routine for breastfeeding?
Dr Raheja says that no, this is also far from the truth. It is best to breastfeed as per the demand of the child, there is no need for a strict routine. Like everyone else, breastfeeding mothers also need a balanced diet. In general, there is no need to change eating habits. Children are familiar with their mother’s food preferences from the time they are in the womb.
Now the most common thing! It is said that mothers do not have enough milk as per the requirement of the child, so they can feed him with outside food i.e. powdered milk. The truth is completely different from this. The World Health Organization report claims that almost all mothers produce the right amount of milk for their children. The production of breast milk is determined by how well the baby is attached to the breast. There are many other myths related to breastfeeding and it is important to refute these myths. For those mothers who are feeding and also those who are going to fulfill their responsibilities in the future.
