Beirut: The Israeli army has carried out a massive air attack in Syria. Syria said several people were killed and wounded in Israeli airstrikes early Friday near the town of Usek in the northern city of Aleppo. Also there has been a lot of damage to properties. Syrian state media quoted a military official as saying that there were Israeli strikes on civilian targets in Aleppo and its suburbs and drone strikes by Syrian rebel groups. It did not give the exact number of casualties.
The Britain-based war monitor Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the Israeli strikes targeted a missile depot belonging to the Lebanese militant Hezbollah group in Jibrin, a southern suburb of Aleppo near Aleppo International Airport. It said dozens of soldiers were killed or injured in the attacks. The Observatory said explosions were still heard two hours after the attacks. There was no immediate statement from Israeli officials on the attacks.
Israel often attacks Syrian targets
Israel frequently attacks Iranian-linked targets in Syria but rarely acknowledges them. On Thursday, Syrian state media reported an airstrike near the capital Damascus, saying it wounded two civilians. Hezbollah has an armed presence in Syria as it sides with government forces in the ongoing conflict in the country. Aleppo, Syria’s largest city and once its commercial hub, has faced similar attacks in the past, forcing the closure of its international airport. However, Friday’s attack had no impact on the airport. The war in Gaza and clashes between Hezbollah and Israeli forces on the Lebanon-Israel border have been going on for the last five months. In this background, attacks in Syria have increased. (AP)
