Gaza: The Israeli army has launched a massive airstrike in central Gaza. 20 people were killed in this attack, mostly women and children. Meanwhile, fighting broke out across the north on Sunday after differences emerged among Israeli leaders over governance of Gaza (i.e. who should rule) after the end of the war with Hamas. This war has currently entered its eighth month. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is facing criticism from his own cabinet.
Benny Gantz, a member of Israel’s three-member war cabinet, has threatened to quit the government if a new plan to include an international administration in Gaza after the war is not drawn up by June 8. US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan is expected to meet with top Israeli leaders on Sunday to discuss an ambitious US bid to help the Palestinian Authority rule Gaza in exchange for Saudi Arabia recognizing Israel and eventually gaining statehood. The plan will be discussed Netanyahu, an opponent of granting Palestinian statehood, rejected these proposals and said Israel would establish security control over Gaza and partner with the Western-backed Palestinian Authority and locals not affiliated with Hamas.
Hamas becomes stronger again
Even though the post-war plan is being discussed in full swing, there is no end in sight to the ongoing war between Hamas and Gaza. In recent weeks Hamas regrouped in parts of northern Gaza that were heavily bombed in the early days of the war. According to records from Deir al-Balah’s Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital, 20 people, including eight women and four children, were killed in the airstrike on Nusirat refugee camp. Five other people were killed in the airstrike on Nussirat, according to the Palestinian Red Crescent emergency service. The airstrike in Deir al-Balah killed Zahed al-Houli, a senior Hamas-run police officer, and another man. (AP)
