Beirut: Hamas leader Ismail Haniyya was assassinated after attending the swearing-in ceremony of Iran’s new president. Iran and the terrorist organization Hamas gave this information early on Wednesday. Hamas blamed Israel’s air strike for the death of the head of its political bureau. At the same time, Iran’s paramilitary force ‘Revolutionary Guard’ said that it is investigating the murder of Haniyya. It did not say how the murder took place and who killed Haniyya. At present, no one has taken responsibility for the murder, but Israel is suspected. Israel has not yet commented on this.
‘Declared a martyr’
Hamas said Haniyya was in Tehran to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian along with other officials of the organization, Hezbollah and allied groups. It said that Haniyya was killed in a Jewish airstrike on his residence in Tehran. Hamas said in a statement, “Hamas declares brother Ismail Haniyya a martyr for the great people of Palestine and the people of Arab and Islamic countries and all free people around the world.” Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank condemned Haniyya’s killing and called it a “cowardly act and dangerous development”. Haniyya left the Gaza Strip in 2019 and was living in exile in Qatar.

There was a terrorist attack in Israel
The top leader of Hamas in Gaza is Yehya Sinwar, who plotted the attack on Israel on October 7. 1,200 people were killed in this attack and about 250 people were taken hostage. Haniya’s three sons and four grandchildren were killed in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza in April. Haniya’s murder has happened at a time when the administration of US President Joe Biden is trying to persuade Hamas and Israel to agree on a temporary ceasefire and release of hostages. (AP)
